Shaniera Akram, wife of former cricketer Wasim Akram tweeted about horrific condition of Karachi’s Clifton Beach.
Shaniera posted several videos and picture of the beach littered with medical waste, vials of blood and syringes and asked authorities to close down the beach for public until it is clean and safe to visit.
DO NOT go to the beach and try to clean it, this is biohazardous waste and needs to be a restricted area and cleaned by professionals. The sea and beach needs to be declared unsafe for everyone immediately ”, Shaniera tweeted
Her tweet drew attention of the authorities and actions were taken instantly to clean the beach. Sindh Police imposed Section 144 so that no one could come to the beach until it gets clean.
Senator Murtaza Wahab along with Secretary Environment, DC South & Cantonment Board visited the beach to oversee the cleanup with the help of Secretary Environment, DC South & Cantonment Board. He tweeted that the beach is 80% clean and thanked Shaniera for highlighting the problem.
“Visited Clifton beach earlier today to oversee the cleanup of the beach with the assistance of Secretary Environment, DC South & Cantonment Board. The area is 80% clear now. Thank u @iamShaniera for highlighting the issue & CBC staff for cleaning it up,” he wrote
Now, Shaniera wants every citizen to join hands and to clean the beach as 80% cleanliness is still dangerous. She tweeted,
Now is the time to act, come together & use what has happened as a wake up call.80% clean is not good enough for me & certainly not good enough for the people of this city. This problem can’t just go away from cleaning the beach we need to go straight to the source of the problem!
