This all has started yesterday after Asma Shirazi published her column on a BBC Urdu website. Apparently, she criticized the PTI-led government for the downfall of the economy. As per her column, she metaphorically wrote that (translated from Urdu) “Whether the black goats are beheaded or the blood of pigeons is shed, the puppets are hung or the needles are pricked, the economy is not going to recover while the demands of the economy are demanding change.”
After the column, an ourtage has been observed on the social media platforms. Firstly, Dr. Shahbaz Gill, Spokesperson and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Communication tweeted in reply to Asma Shirazi’s column.
Later, another senior leader of PTI, Hammad Azhar expressed his disappointment on the opinion column of the journalist.
This had started to create havoc of tweets, but the real blow came when PTI’s official Twitter account tweeted a video regarding the phone call between Asma Shirazi and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
After this people on social media came towards and expressed their opinions regarding the situation, many people supported Asma Shirazi while many canceled her.
Twitter was being filled up with the trending hashtag but then another video from PTI’s official Twitter account was posted which pulled so many eyeballs.
After this, netizens expressed that using a party’s official handle to target an individual is not the right thing to do.
Khurram Hussain, a renowned journalist came forward in support of the journalist.
Journalist Mansoor Ali Khan tweeted and advised her to ‘stay strong.’
Former Senator Afrasiab Khattak expressed his opinion regarding the matter.
Asma Shirazi is famously known for openly criticizing the government for its censorship of journalists. She tweeted questioning the ban of journalist Hamid Mir earlier in May.
So many people directly questioned the character of Asma Shirazi which is condemnable.
There is clearly a division of people on this particular issue, some are supporting Asma Shirazi while some are not holding back and criticizing the journalist.
