RAWALPINDI: Pointing towards the ongoing sit-in protest in Islamabad, spokesperson of Pakistan armed forces, Major General Asif Ghafoor has said that the military would not allow any effort to harm the national stability and support the government within the ambit of the constitution.
“Pakistan Army is a national and impartial institution, which believes in the supremacy of the constitution and law and always supports democratically elected government, not any single party,” Radio Pakistan quoted Asif Ghafoor as saying while talking to a private news channel, hours after Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman asked the “state institution” to stop supporting the “illegitimate government”.
The Army spokesman said tension persisted on the Line of Control and Indian repression was going on in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
He said around 100,000 troops had been deployed on the eastern border and nearly 200,000 on the western border for defence of the motherland.
He said in such circumstances, chaos and unrest in the country would not be in the national interest.
On the opposition parties’ allegation of rigging in elections, he said Army fulfilled its legal and constitutional responsibility in polls.
The director general Inter Services Public Relations said the government and opposition negotiation committees were working in a better coordination and we hope this process will move on in a better way.
He said a year had elapsed now after the government’s formation and the issues were not resolved on streets merely through accusations.
Major General Asif Ghafoor said the opposition had the option to avail their constitutional right and take up their allegations to the relevant institutions instead of accusing the Army on roads. He said democratic problems must be resolved democratically.
“During the last two decades, the country has gone through very difficult circumstances fighting terrorism by rendering numerous sacrifices,” he said responding to a query.
The DG ISPR said the people and the armed forces of Pakistan had fought against the terrorism which no other could do.
