Anti-racism protestors vandalise Winston Churchill statue in London
LONDON: Protesters demanding end to racism defaced the memorial statue of war-time British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in London on Sunday afternoon.
A man scribbled “was a racist” under Churchill’s statue. In a video, the man who defaced the Churchill memorial unapologetically said that the former prime minister was a confirmed racist as he didn’t do anything for black people or people of color.
Demonstrators surrounded the memorial and shouted that “Churchill was a rascist”. Later, a group of people came in and surrounded the statue to protect it from vandals.
Killing of a black man George Floyd by an American police has flared anti-racism protests worldwide and people are demanding end to discrimination.
Protestors also tore down and threw a statue of a slave trader into the harbor in the United Kingdom’s Bristol city.
Police have said that an investigation was being carried out in identifying the culprits involved in vandalising acts.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted, “Protests had been “subverted by thuggery”.
People have took to streets in several cities in the UK as part of the protests regarding ‘Black Lives Matter’.
