Many people are furious when rockstar Ali Azmat’s opinions about Malika-e-Tarannum Madam Noor Jehan in an interview became viral on social media. In an interview with a private media outlet, the Junoon band rockstar discussed how Pakistanis embraced MTV’s cultural revolution when he was younger.
“Living in Lahore and playing street cricket in our shorts, growing up where 11 kids would collect money to purchase a ball, it was obvious for us to totally accept the cultural invasion of MTV,” Azmat explained. He then went on to say, “Our own society and culture did not provide something comparable. If you put on a performance on TV, Noor Jehan would be dressed in a saree, with excessive jewellery and over-the-top makeup. We were irritated with mai (elderly woman). We’d wonder why they’d make us see this kofta (meatball).”
At that time, the host interjected and stated that Noor Jehan was a fantastic vocalist. “I’m telling you about a time when I was younger and we welcomed various cultures, which subsequently became the standard.”
Soon after the video of the interview went viral, many people turned to social media to protest against Azmat’s remarks.
One user called Madam Noor Jehan as an icon.
However, some people came forward to defend Ali Azmat by mentioning that he has his opinions.
Noor Jehan’s daughter Minha Hasan penned down her response on her Instagram account.
There has been a lot of talks about his interview and his opinion on Madam Noor Jehan is going viral on social media. However, Ali Azmat is yet to answer to the outrage.
