LAHORE: Veteran Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal on Monday called for holding new elections in the country.
“There’s only one way left to get out of the current political and economic situation the country is facing and that is holding fresh elections,” Ahsan Iqbal said while addressing media in Lahore.

He demanded that national dialogue should be launched for free and fair elections in 2020, in which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should give a transparent mechanism for holding elections in consultation with all the political parties.
The PML-N leader said in Rahbar Committee’s meeting on Tuesday, his party will exchange views with other opposition parties to carry forward and make effective the protest against government’s flawed and failed economic policies.

He said for the first in Pakistan’s history, a government withdrew its ordinances in the parliament.
The incumbent government had failed at every level, he said adding that the government had failed to take any measure for formation of Siraiki Provincee in Punjab which showed their lack of sincerity. He also said that his party had submitted an amendment bill regarding formation of Hazara province.
“The governance breakdown, specially in Punjab, has turned into a gigantic threat for the country. Infrastructure, education sector and health sector along other facilities that were provided by the PML-N have been ruined,” he said.
Ahsan Iqbal also asked the government to pay the arrears to the media and stop shackling it. He also demanded from the government to release the PML-N leaders arrested on “the agenda of revenge”.
