18 places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa declared sub-jail for fear of outbreak of coronavirus in prisons

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has declared 18 places as sub-jail where the prisoners suspected of contracting coronavirus or infected with the disease would be shifted.

The officials of prison department said coronavirus-affected inmates would be kept at those places in case of an emergency. The places declared as sub-jail include buildings of schools, colleges, department of agriculture, hotels and shelter homes.

New prisoners will not be jailed in overcrowded prison cells. Prisoners are overcrowded in Kohat, Noshehra, Swabi, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Malakand.

The officials said the new inmates were being shifted to the nearby central jail. They said preventive measures had been taken viewing spread of COVID-19. They said that no case was reported in jails so far across the province.

The jail officials said precautionary measures against coronavirus were being taken by jail staff and inmates.
