RAWALPINDI: A trainer plane of Pakistan Army Aviation early Tuesday morning crashed in Rawalpindi leaving 17 people dead and 12 others injured.
Media wing of armed forces, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that the incident took place at a residential area near Mohra Colony within limits of Rawat police station and the deceased included five crew members including two pilots and 12 residents of the area.
The ISPR said the plane crashed at a private housing society, which destroyed five houses as they caught fire due to the crash.
Rescue teams of Pakistan Army soon arrived at the site of the incident and rushed the dead and the wounded for autopsy and medical assistance respectively. The blaze was also doused.
Martyred pilots have been identified as Lt Col Waseem and Lt Col Saqib and the other three crew members are Naib Subedar Afzal, Hawaldar Ibn e Amin and Hawaldar Rehmat.
The ISPR said the trainer plane was on routine flight when the incident took place.
Investigation team has started collecting evidence from the site to find out what caused the incident.
